WHAT TO EXPECT:
Firstly a screening questionnaire and photo assessment of your smile will determine if you are a suitable candidate for teeth whitening. A complimentary and more thorough assessment will be carried out on the day of your appointment to confirm your suitability.
On the day of your appointment, your treatment starts with checking your current tooth colour so we know where you start and how many shades lighter you finish with. It is also a good idea to take a selfie at this stage so you have the amazing before and after photos as well.
Throughout the procedure your soft tissues (cheeks, lips and tongue) will be kept away by using a comfortable mouth piece and gauze (like the picture above). Next, your gums will be protected a little more by applying a gingival barrier.
Once I have isolated your soft tissues and teeth, I will apply the whitening gel. The blue LED light is then guided into position and is when the magic happens! This step is repeated 3 or 4 times to achieve optimal results. Most treatments are completed in 3 x 15 min cycles (45 mins), however there is an option to have a fourth round for stubborn stains if required.
At the end of your treatment, the barriers, gauze and mouth piece will be removed and you will be able to have a rinse. A protective desensitising gel will be applied to help lock in your new whiter colour and reduce sensitivity.
TEETH WHITENING FAQ’s:
Does the treatment cause sensitivity?
A possible side effect of ANY tooth whitening may involve tooth sensitivity and can vary between individuals. Some people may feel absolutely no sensitivity, whilst others may be quite uncomfortable. Sensitivity may be felt during the treatment and is typically referred to as a zinger (short little bursts of sensitivity); or it may occur afterwards later in the day. Tooth sensitivity is a temporary side-effect that usually only lasts a few hours to a day. A desensitizing gel will be applied straight after your treatment and you will be able to use this at home throughout the next 24-48 hours as required.
How white will my teeth be? How long will it last?
Teeth whitening has a different degree of effectiveness and permanency as everyone’s teeth are different. It is also very subjective so it is important to note that the results will not be the same for everyone. Your teeth can only whiten to their natural enamel colour. On average most people will achieve a fantastic result of 8 shades whiter.
Cheaper whitening treatments conducted by whitening technicians can only use a limited strength of hydrogen peroxide (6%) and therefore will require a number of treatments to achieve similar results.
No teeth whitening is permanent. How long the effects last will depend on how well you look after your teeth after your treatment and the lifestyle choices you make.
Everyone who completes a whitening treatment with Smiles and Beyond will be given a complimentary touch up pen (valued at $35) to help maintain your new brighter, whiter smile.
Maintenance programs are recommended yearly to keep your smile at its whitest and brightest all year round.
Am I allowed to eat and drink after my treatment?
Teeth whitening treatments open up pours in the enamel, which can allow stains to adhere more easily. This is why a “white diet” is recommended for 24-48 hours after your whitening treatment. Basically avoid anything that will stain a white T-Shirt. So no tea, coffee, red wine, tomato based sauces, soy sauce, brightly coloured foods such as berries and avoid spices such as turmeric. Don’t worry, its actually quite easy and we will provide you with a comprehensive list of food and drink ideas to get you through the next couple of days.
Can anyone whiten their teeth?
Unfortunately teeth whitening is not for everyone. Teeth Whitening is NOT recommended for pregnant or lactating women. Zoom Teeth Whitening is not recommended for light sensitive individuals, people receiving radiation or other chemotherapeutic drugs or treatments . As the Zoom lamp emits a visible LED light, people with a history of melanoma or taking any drugs that increase photosensitivity (e.g. antibiotics like tetracycline, acne medications such as roaccutane or anti-malarials like doxycycline) should consult with their physician before undergoing the procedure.
Any other recommendations?
It is recommended to have had a recent check-up and clean (within the last 6 months) of your whitening treatment. This will ensure you are dentally fit. For optimal results, it is also recommended that your teeth are free from calculus (tartar) prior to your whitening treatment.
* If you would like to have a professional dental clean prior to your whitening treatment, please let me know so I can allocate additional time (30 mins). This will incur an additional fee of $70 (half price).
